Extraordinary striker Erling Haaland secures an opportunity in his first major tournament this coming summer, following his guidance Norway to the World Cup.

And the 25-year-old Manchester City striker did it in outstanding performance, registering 16 goals in eight World Cup preliminary games - finding the back of the net consistently in all those encounters.

That makes him the top scorer in 2026 World Cup preliminary stage in all continents.

And his national team's 4-1 win against Italy on Sunday, featuring a Haaland brace, ensures they will participating in next summer's World Cup in the American continent.

Haaland stated post-game: "I'm delighted, but primarily relieved. There's considerable expectation and things, and I feel it. But it's exciting."

This marks merely their fourth World Cup, and their initial international competition since Euro 2000.

How Important Was Haaland's Contribution?

The striker's scoring statistics for Norway is nothing short of phenomenal.

He has registered 55 goals in 48 matches for the national team.

Furthermore he is only the sixth player ever, and the first in 53 years, to register 50 finishes in fewer than 50 caps.

Norway's previous top scorer was Jorgen Juve with 33 goals, who kept that distinction for almost a century.

During these qualifying matches he registered 16 finishes - in eight encounters - plus two assists.

This amounts to double the scoring total any competitor has netted in UEFA matches.

He stands as the highest scorer in these qualifying matches in every region, including ones where squads compete double the matches.

Beyond a full year has gone by since Haaland previously didn't score in a match for his country.

Squad Contribution Alongside Haaland

Yet it isn't solely about one player.

The Arsenal midfielder has made 67 appearances for Norway since making his debut at the age of 15.

"Combine Haaland's success with the fact that in this era we also have Martin Odegaard," said an analyst.

Initially in a generation Norway followers will witness the pleasure of cheering their national side in worldwide event.

Their nation featured in the World Cups in 1994, 1998 and 1938, and Euro 2000.

Escaping Historical Omission

Haaland's participation in the global tournament with Norway guarantees he dodges his addition to the collection of iconic athletes who missed World Cup action.

Three Ballon d'Or winners didn't succeed to participate in the global tournament.

George Weah, who secured titles with multiple European clubs, represented Liberia - who haven't qualified for a World Cup.

Legendary Red Devils attacker George Best, considered by many as among the best ever, was a Northern Ireland international during the sixties and seventies when they failed to qualify.

Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano played for three national teams - Colombia, Spain and Argentina - but couldn't reach a World Cup with any national team.
