LeBron James's Legendary Point-Scoring Run Comes to a Close, However Lakers Pull Off Victory Against Raptors.

The Lakers star knew his historic run of reaching double digits was threatened. At the decisive instant, though, it didn't concern him.

The smart move meant distributing the basketball – and he executed. Following that play, the unprecedented record was over.

LeBron's astounding streak of over 1,200 straight regular-season games with 10+ points concluded this past Thursday, when basketball's greatest scorer was limited to a mere eight points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 win against Toronto. He delivered the decisive pass, feeding Rui Hachimura to hit a three-pointer as time expired.

“Nothing,” James stated after being questioned regarding the conclusion of his run. “The team got the victory.”

A Team-First Decision Secures the Win

He might have sought to clinch the contest – and extended his record – with the last shot, but he chose to pass to Rui in the left corner. Hachimura sank it, prompting James raised his arms immediately.

You have to play basketball correctly. You always make the correct play,” James remarked. That has always been my M.O.. That’s how I was instructed to play. That's what I've done throughout my career.”

“LeBron is acutely aware of his point total he has during a game,” stated the team's head coach the coach. “He did it like he’s done throughout his career.”

The Streak's Closing Chapter

James re-entered the game one last time at 5:23 remaining, the win along with the historic run on the line. His tally was only six points on 3-of-15 shooting by that point.

He managed a basket with 1:46 left to tie the game then missed a shot at one minute to go which could have taken him to double digits.

He avoided taking one more attempt – even though he had a chance. Austin Reaves passed him the ball as time wound down, but James decided to make the pass instead of shooting.

The spirits of the game, if you do it correctly, they often repay you,” the coach concluded.

Reflecting on a Monumental Run

The record began back in January 2007. It stood as the most extended streak of its kind in NBA history: His Airness, Michael Jordan had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and Karl Malone was fourth on the list of 575 games.

“He’s such a team-oriented player,” said teammate Jake LaRavia.

“He’s just playing the sport. He had the opportunity but given the player he is and his character as an individual, he executed the team play, found Rui and secured the victory.”

Getting to ten points was usually a formality early in the start of fourth quarters. Throughout his run, he had reached ten points by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions prior to Thursday.

However, two of those unusual single-digit games through three quarters had happened in the last week: He had nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks last week, then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns earlier in the week.

He succeeded in keep the streak alive against the Suns. The very next outing, it concluded – and he celebrated regardless.

I only ever make the best play. That comes naturally, regardless of outcome,” James declared. “You make the smart play, the sports deities consistently rewarding me.”
