Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Leader.

Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Commanding Victory

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Agenda Centered On Security and Migration

Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and regard for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely focused on promises to address rising violence and significantly reduce immigration.

He consistently cited migrants, notably the around 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.

His proposals envisioned U.S.-style measures such as erecting camps, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.

Amid a Regional Trend

Many analysts view Kast's win as fitting into a wider rightward shift in Latin America, coming after this year's electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other pundits also frame it as a part of the established rotation of power between left and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Ruling Without a Strong Majority

In spite of his decisive popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to command an clear majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.

This legislative situation could complicate his plans, including a pledge to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not detailed concrete steps.

"There are many things about what a Kast presidency will operate that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," said a political science expert.

The professor stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. But where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
