Chicago White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The deal features a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17M for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The contract provides that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 in February, enters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the division but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to 56 games due to an side strain. Even with recording 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to third.

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a equalizing homer in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
